What Type of Senior Living Community is Right for Me?

It all starts with knowing your options—and having a basic understanding of the nomenclature. The world of senior living has its own vocabulary, with a variety of terms and acronyms. Below, you’ll see a basic definition of many of the key phrases you’ll encounter, followed by an infographic which can help direct you to the type of senior living community most appropriate for you.
Senior Independent Living
For seniors who are mentally and physically able to live on their own without the need of assistance with the activities of daily living or advanced levels of skilled nursing care.
Assisted Living
For seniors who need assistance with the activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and grooming, medication management, and personal maintenance.
Skilled Nursing
For seniors with chronic medical conditions or disabilities, or those in chronic pain, who require round-the-clock care and supervision by licensed skilled nursing professionals.
Life Plan Community
A Life Plan Community (LPC) provides a wide range of services, amenities and activities for residents while allowing them to seamlessly transition from independent living to on-campus assisted living and skilled nursing care as health needs change. Some LPCs also include memory care residences and short-term rehabilitation. Financial arrangements vary, depending on the community. LPC types include entrance-fee based, rental LPC, equity LPC, modified, and fee-for service.
Active Adult Community
An age restricted community designed for active adults in which the residents own their own homes. A homeowner’s association often governs the community, and the amenities (golf course, activity center, etc.) will typically be owned by the HOA.
Senior Apartments
Comfortable, low-maintenance rental apartments created for 55+ seniors looking for convenience and a downsized lifestyle.
In-Home Care
In-home care providers offer a variety of non-medical services for seniors, including assistance with bathing, grooming, and dressing, light housework, transportation, companionship, and more.
